His grandpa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn everything he could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the detrimental feedback from other people annihilate his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker players on the planet.
He began playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a teaching period and winning wasn’t a common thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated many of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to dedication and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is quite abashed about his success. He knows he makes errors every single session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a normal basis.
